Located in the heart of The Ohio State University, Mirror Lake is one of the most iconic landmarks on campus. This restoration project aimed to transform the former artificial pond into a sustainable and biodiverse environment, while preserving its historical significance and creating a place of peace and beauty for students and visitors.

The redesign replaced hard edges with naturalistic forms and incorporated more than 31,000 wetland plants, over 10,000 perennials, and 51 mature trees. Key hardscape features include the construction of the limestone Neil Avenue Overlook, stone Grotto with a true keystone arch, and revitalized amphitheater grounds. Plant selection was driven by native species and pollinator support, and a natural water filtration system was installed to reduce chemical usage. This project successfully blended ecological responsibility with aesthetic excellence and historic reverence.

Ecological Restoration: Installed over 31,000 wetland plants and 20,000 ground cover plugs to reestablish a healthy aquatic ecosystem.

Historic Stonework: Constructed a stone Grotto with a true keystone arch and salvaged pieces of the original Memorial Fountain.

Diverse Plant Palette: Planted 10,400 perennials across 17 varieties and 51 trees spanning 10 species for year-round interest and biodiversity.

Natural Filtration: Integrated aquatic systems that clean the water without chemicals, improving sustainability.

Material Detailing: Used Indiana Limestone veneer and capstone to elevate the overlook experience along Neil Avenue.

Amphitheater Enhancement: Refreshed Browning Amphitheater with layered plantings like roses, viburnas, and hydrangeas for a welcoming, colorful space.
