Case Study: Modern Rooftop Sculpture Garden

EMI’s design team reimagined an unused rooftop into a modern sculpture garden—an artistic escape overlooking the Scioto River in downtown Columbus.

What was once a stark concrete rooftop has been transformed by EMI into a dynamic “sculpture terrace” that mirrors the artistic character of its owners. Downsizing from a residence with an expansive sculpture garden, the clients envisioned a space that honored their past while embracing their new urban lifestyle.

This fifth-floor rooftop now features a series of conversation zones, raised planters, geometric pathways, and curated views of salvaged sculptures — all while overcoming strict weight load requirements and logistical challenges. With no access to freight elevators and no ability to crane materials in, every element of this design-build project had to be meticulously planned and installed through the client’s home.

EMI’s rooftop design and installation project earned Gold at the 2024 NALP Awards, recognized for its innovative use of space, sustainable elements, and striking visual impact.
