Located in the heart of Columbus, Ohio, the Scioto Mile Fountain is a landmark feature that has been a staple of the city's downtown area since its original completion in 2011. Named one of the 15 best fountains in the world by CNN in 2014, the fountain faced maintenance issues and was shut down in 2021.
In May 2023, a $15 million rebuild commenced to restore and enhance the fountain's iconic presence. The project's goal was to transform the fountain into a year-round attraction, featuring new lighting, water features, and expanded seating and shaded areas. EMI, having installed the original fountain, was tasked with the rebuild, which included commercial installation of pavers, granite curbs, irrigation, new trees, perennials, soils, decomposed granite, and turf. Despite numerous challenges, the fountain successfully reopened in May 2024.
EMI’s work on the Scioto Mile fountain project earned Gold from NALP and Silver from OGIA in 2024, recognized for its technical precision, standout design, and impactful public space enhancement.

Construction Project Highlights
The Scioto Mile Fountain rebuild successfully integrated new elements with the existing infrastructure, revitalizing the space while preserving key landscaping. One of the main highlights was the installation of over 3,000 square feet of custom-fabricated elliptical and circular pavers, using stainless-steel brackets to ensure precision.
The project also added significant landscaping, including 30 trees, 165 shrubs, and 704 perennials, enhancing the overall aesthetic and creating a welcoming park environment. Additionally, a Smart Rainbird irrigation system was installed, ensuring efficient water management.
The project was completed on time, meeting the Memorial Day deadline, and included the creation of expanded seating areas, shade, and vibrant plantings. Despite the complexities of working with pre-existing systems and coordinating with other trades, the team exceeded expectations, delivering a beautiful and functional public space that Columbus residents can enjoy for years to come.
